Back to the Future
Texas A&M International University
Laredo, TX
March 5th – April 6th 2012

Inventions, alchemy, robots, modernity, science fiction, artificial intelligence, undiscovered life forms. This juried exhibition aims to explore these topics and how they can be manifested through diverse artistic practices and materials.

JUROR
Bruce Helander, Fmr. provost of RISD, artist (in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan, Guggenheim, LACMA & 60 other museums) and critic/curator.

Bruce Helander is an artist whose specialty is collage and assemblage. He is also a well-known curator and art critic. He has a master’s degree in painting from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, where he later became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the college. He is a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and recently won the South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship for professional achievement in the visual arts.

Helander arrived in Palm Beach in 1982 from New York City, where he published Art Express magazine. He quickly established a cutting edge gallery on Worth Avenue that thrived for thirteen years. During that time he opened a second gallery on West Broadway in New York City. He was also a commissioner for ARCOM in Palm Beach and the vice-president of the Worth Avenue Association. He is active in the south Florida art scene and was on the board of directors at the Armory Art Center and later was the Director of Exhibitions there.

City Link magazine called Bruce Helander “Arguably the most recognized and successful collage artist in the country…” and Kenworth Moffett, former director, Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale said in Gold Coast magazine that “If there was a Pulitzer Prize for collage, Helander would surely win it.”

His work is in over fifty museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and most recently, the Whitney Museum of American Art and Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles.

His collages appear in Jazziz, The New Yorker and Palm Beach Illustrated magazines, among others.

He has written extensively on contemporary art and has written over 150 published reviews. He has an enthusiastic following for his monthly columns in Art of the Times magazine, Art and Living magazine (Los Angeles) and ARTnews. Star Group International just published his book of reviews, titled Learning to See—An Artist’s View on Contemporary Artists from Artschwager to Zakanitch, of forty of his favorite reviews.

As a curator, Helander has coordinated over eighty exhibitions of contemporary works. He has organized one-man shows for legendary artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, John Chamberlain, Duane Hanson, Larry Poons, Jules Olitski, Dale Chihuly and Kenneth Noland, among others. Helander’s written observations about art are unusual in that very few art writers are also artists—in this case, with an academic background, extensive gallery and publishing experience and regular exhibit of his work.

Opening reception Tuesday, January 17, 5-7 p.m.

From the press release:

The Millennials is a juried exhibition that seeks to offer a visual entrée into the minds of America’s largest age group, nicknamed the millennial generation. The Pew Research Center has defined this group, ages 18 to 29, as “the American teens and twenty-somethings currently making the passage into adulthood–who have begun to forge theirs: confident, self-expressive, liberal, upbeat and receptive to new ideas and ways of living.” The twelve artists chosen for the exhibition hail from nine states, representing all the regions of the U.S., are primarily in their mid-twenties, and submitted work in a variety of two and three dimensional media.

UPDATE: Looks like Dream won the juror’s choice award!

This winter I will be participating in PUNCH Gallery’s Juried Exhibition, Acquiesce, then Silent.

From PUNCH Gallery’s website:

	Acquiesce, Then Silent
2011 Juried Exhibition

December 1 – 30, 2011

Juried by Stefano Catalani
Director of Curatorial Affairs/Artistic Director
at the Bellevue Arts Museum

Opening Reception and Awards: 5-8pm
First Thursday, December 1, 2011
Awards at 7pm

About the Show
PUNCH enthusiastically presents our third International Juried Exhibition, Acquiesce, then Silent. Butterflies will dance and bees will sting. Yes, this year’s exhibition just might be the Bout of the Century. This round, more than 400 artists collectively submitted 1,461 entries from all (well, most) corners of the globe. From this, juror Stefano Catalani, Director of Curatorial Affairs/Artistic Director at the Bellevue Arts Museum, has pared it down to a dozen badass artists. The overwhelming response to this call was sensational and the work received was far-reaching in both its quality and innovation.

This year’s selection will feature tattoos, skulls, a dead bird, a dying dandelion, a bunch of tiny lawn chairs, a disemboweled horse in a clear cut, some hematite, and a giant glow worm. Come and witness the spectacle in its entire splendor. Trophies and awards will be announced at the opening reception on December 1 at 7 p.m. And remember to cast your vote for the people’s choice award when you visit the show. Stuff the ballot box if feel so inclined. We dare you.

As a magnanimous gesture of support for artistic ingenuity and creative perspectives, twenty artists were invited to create innovative and engaging artwork in response to research on behavioral economics, dishonesty, and cheating after attending an interactive forum at the Center for Advanced Hindsight.

With no limitation to the style or media of pieces created for “Creative Dishonesty: Cheat Codes,” a portion of the artists, which included sculptors, painters, and photographers, branched out stylistically from their normal medium, while others pushed conceptual boundaries.

Albert Gilewicz, a sculptor, utilized “Ethos” bottled water as the foundation for a sculpture exploring the truth behind branding and corporate marketing, compelling the viewer to confront the reality of selling their morality for the sum total of $0.05 donated to the development of drinkable water sources in Africa.

Artist Kerry Cox created an interactive installation that questions the nature of imagery as “moral” or “immoral” through audience participation. In a similar vein, Bruce Mitchell and Adrian Schlesinger created projects inquire how to classify an image as “art” after mechanical tools are used to enlarge, project, draft, and print.

Meet these artists and many others at the opening reception on December 16th from 6-10 PM! Pick their brains about the relationship between creativity, honesty, cheating, and the “fudge factor”. Join us on Third Friday for delicious food, wine, thoughtful artwork, and lively conversation at the Center for Advanced Hindsight, 2024 W Main St, Bay C, Durham, NC.

A comprehensive exhibit catalogue, including reflections by the artists alongside responses from the curator and the researchers at the Center for Advanced Hindsight, will be published and available for purchase.

About the Center for Advanced Hindsight
The central goal of the Center for Advanced Hindsight is to develop great insights (in hindsight) about an extensive and diverse set of research projects. As a non-discriminating institution, its work examines published as well as unpublished work, and the work of researchers of all ranks. Of course, this involvement is restricted to work conducted by unaffiliated researchers, as this kind of intimate scientific inquiry by its members would be too dangerous. Needless to say, all aforementioned work is done retrospectively. One might even go as far as saying “in hindsight.” The sole responsibility of members is to critique the work of others and comment on the obvious intuitiveness and predictability of the results. In fact, there is no “ground-breaking” research that comes as a surprise to the brilliant minds of the Center. The initiation process to become an official member of the center requires an oath of commitment to apathy and absurdity.

December 2, 2011-January 14, 2012

From the Fort Collins Lincoln Center website:

“This is not your typical landscape show, but is deeply tied to how we experience and interpret our relationship to the land, the environment, and our surroundings. The focus of the exhibition will center on work that stretches the idea of how we view our environment, surroundings and the ‘scape and scope’ of the land as metaphor for something else entirely. Award-winning art critic Leanne Goebel is our Guest Juror for the exhibition. [...] Don’t miss this intriguing exhibit that will have you thinking about landscape art in an entirely new way.”

EDIT: Shine n’ Swarm was awarded Best in Green! Photos of the installation have been posted HERE.

I will be participating in 1708 Gallery’s 4th Annual InLight Richmond on Friday, October 21, 2011.

The following excerpt was taken from 1708 Gallery’s website:

“Organized by 1708 Gallery, InLight Richmond is a public exhibition of light-based art. InLight Richmond 2011 will take place along the James River, on a site that stretches from Dominion Resources to MeadWestvaco and the Federal Reserve, and that features the American Civil War Center at Tredegar Iron Works.

The James River runs through the heart of downtown Richmond and is truly a lifeline for the River City. Once a major avenue for commerce, the James is now a popular recreation destination. At the heart of the site is Historic Tredegar Iron Works, once one of the South’s largest producers of cannon and railroad rails, a fact that led to Richmond’s selection as the capital of the confederacy. Tredegar Iron Works is now home to the American Civil War Center, the nation’s first museum to interpret the Civil War from Union, Confederate, and African American perspectives. This site has particular resonance this year as it is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

The site of InLight Richmond 2011 will by transformed by art installations selected by Juror Matthew Lyons, Curator at The Kitchen, in NY, presenting a mix of visual, performance and interactive art installed along the river and beach, sidewalks, historic buildings, walls and the surrounding grounds, train trestles, pedestrian bridges and more.”
